Medicare Disenrollment

Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period (MADP)

SeniorQuote can help

There may be times you find it necessary or desirable to switch or drop a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare has firm guidelines on when you may do this and what you can change. Let’s clarify it here.

When can I drop coverage from a Medicare Advantage Plan?

If you think your Medicare AdvantagePlan is no longer serving your needs and you wish to make a change, for example, you wish to enroll in a Medicare Supplementplan to cover more of your out-of-pocket costs, you need to switch to Original Medicare first, then buy a Medicare Supplement policy. A SeniorQuote Licensed Agent can help determine when and how to do this and find you the right policy.

Your window for making a change is January 1 through February 14. Your new coverage will begin the first day of the month following your change.

If you’d like to switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, or enroll for the first time, your opportunity is during Open Enrollment, October 15 through December 15. See specific information here. [link to open enrollment page]

What you can change during the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment Period:

You can leave your plan and switch to Original Medicare. If you switch to Original Medicare during this period, you’ll have until February 14 to also join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to add drug coverage. Your coverage will begin the first day of the month after the plan gets your enrollment form.

What you can’t change:

Enrollment and disenrollment is very limited, so we recommend you call a SeniorQuote expert to help you before you make any changes. Here is more information:

  • You cannot switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan.
  • You cannot switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another.
  • You cannot switch from one Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to another.
  • You cannot join, switch, or drop a Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plan

Medicare Plan Options

Medicare Supplement & Medicare Advantage

Which type of coverage is right for YOU?

Before focusing on which plan to get with your Medicare, you should first focus on yourself. Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage Plans are two separate and distinct types of coverage.  A beneficiary may not have a Medicare Supplement and a Medicare Advantage plan. This means that it is important to know which type of coverage suites you best. Here are some important factors–the ABCs–which you should consider before deciding whether Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage is the right option for you.

  1.  Access – Do you have particular doctors or facilities you would like to retain access to? Would you want to have open access to any Medicare provider in the U.S. without the need of a referral? Or, are you open-minded to using any Medicare health providers in your area?
  2.  Benefits – What benefits are important to you? Do you need coverage for things not covered by Medicare, such as prescription drugs, dental, vision & hearing?
  3. Cost – What is your budget? Would you rather pay a premium each month, to reduce your out-of-pockets costs later? Or, would you rather pay little to $0 each month, and “pay-as-you-go” with copays and coinsurance?
